Andrew Vale, special agent in charge of the Albany office, is leaving his post at the end of the month to become assistant director in charge of the bureau’s Washington D.C. field office.

Vale may best be known as the leader of the investigation into the first bombing of the World Trade Center, the Times Union reports.

“It is with tremendously mixed emotions,” Vale said about his departure in an interview at his office. “This area has become home for me and my family.”

The FBI has only three assistant directors in the country – one at each field office in New York City, Los Angeles and Washington D.C.

“Really I just wanted to make a difference,” Vale, a 25-year-veteran of the FBI said. “I kind of viewed the FBI as being elite and wanted to work for an organization that was all about making a difference in the communities that we served.”

FBI Closes Kingston Office, Moves Operations to Albany

The FBI shuttered its Kingston office in New York and moved staff and resources to the Albany offices, the Mid-Hudson News reports.

The move will make operations run more smoothly, said FBI spokesman Paul Holstein.

“The Albany division did not have any resources diverted away as part of the closing of this resident agency. These assets were merely reallocated within our division to be utilized more effectively and efficiently,” told the Mid-Hudson News. “One of the major issues when we look at an analysis to determine what resident agencies should be closed is to reduce internal costs to run it more efficiently and to use taxpayers’ money more effectively.”

An FBI agent with extensive experience in counterterrorism is taking over the bureau’s Albany Division, the Associated Press reports.

Andrew Vale has been named agent in charge of the division, which is responsible for investigations in northern New York and Vermont, the AP wrote.

Vale began his career with the FBI in 1991, when he started investigated terrorism and civil rights in Newark, N.J.

Vale also served in Washington beginning in 2001 and became involved with domestic terrorism investigations.

Vale continued similar work in the Albany Division beginning in 2006, the AP wrote.
