Weiner was sentenced in 2017 to 21 months in federal prison for sexting with a minor. He served about 15 months before he was transferred to a residential re-entry center in Brooklyn, New York.

The FBI is investigating whether a Pennsylvania congressman or his campaign bribed his primary opponent to drop out of a 2012 race against him.

A judge authorized a search warrant for the FBI to search the email account of  Rep. Bob Brady, a Democrat, the Daily Beast reports

His primary opponent, Jimmie Moore, dropped out of the primary election in November 2012 after he allegedly accepted $90,000 from Brady’s campaign. The money was allegedly transferred to one of Moore’s aides to pay down services rendered to the Moore campaign.

“The payments were routed in this manner so that the FEC reports filed by the Brady and Moore campaigns would not show that Brady had made a payment to his primary opponent in violation of FECA [Federal Election Campaign Act] contribution limits,” the affidavit states.

The FBI affidavit states that Brady, Moore and three others were likely “involved in the commission of several crimes, including conspiracy, false statements, producing false records, false campaign contribution reports, and violating limits on campaign contributions and expenditures.”

Brady also is under investigation for allegedly lying to the FBI.

“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver poked fun at the recent discovery that the Secret Service tried to embarrass a Republican congressman by releasing “unflattering private information.”

Oliver pointed out that Rep. Jason Chaffetz has no problem embarrassing himself without the help of the Secret Service.

“That’s right. The Secret Service attempted to embarrass one of their biggest critics, Congressman Jason Chaffetz, by leaking his rejected application to join them, essentially behaving like the high school table of mean girls,” Oliver said before affecting a snotty teen girl’s voice, wrote Raw Story. “You only hate us because we won’t let you sit with us, Jason. Don’t look at our food. You’re making it uncool.”

Oliver ridiculed the Secret Service for breaking the law to embarrass someone who so easily embarrasses himself.

“I don’t know what’s worse here,” Oliver said. “The fact that the Secret Service is so petty that they broke the law to embarrass Jason Chaffetz, or that they’re so stupid and they didn’t realize, if you want to embarrass Jason Chaffetz, just wait, and he will do it for you.”

Former Congressman: Merging ATF with FBI Would Be Ugly Mistake

By Former Rep. Jim Ross Lightfoot
For The Hill

The idea of merging the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) into the FBI has reared its ugly head once again. This idea is wrong in so many ways. As a former chairman of the old Treasury, Postal Service and General Government Subcommittee in the Appropriations Committee, which had jurisdiction over the ATF, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Customs Service, and other federal law enforcement, and as a former police officer, I am speaking from experience.

My father used to tell me, “Son, you can’t fix anything until you figure out why it broke.” If Congress had been doing its job, the situation within ATF and other federal agencies would not be a problem today.
It’s all about accountability. Or, I should say, lack of accountability.

For example, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) held extensive hearings into the so-called Fast and Furious fiasco. The people responsible for the operation were identified.

And then the deafening sound of silence. Nothing happened. No one got fired. No one indicted for what was identified as criminal action. No oversight hearings into the operation of the ATF. No questioning of ATF management. No one held accountable for anything.

The only result of these hearings was retribution by ATF management against the agents that came forward and identified the people within ATF behind Fast and Furious.

Ladies and gentlemen of the U.S. Congress, one of your sworn, top duties is accountability from all federal agencies to the American people. You have failed us miserably! The ATF is not the only agency with huge internal problems. You would do the country a huge favor if you would put away the entire headline, photo-op grabbing issues for one whole two-year session of Congress and spend your time doing extensive oversight into all agencies and then taking the appropriate actions to correct the issues you uncover. You all would get reelected.

A Texas congressman refused to be kept out of the McAllen Border Patrol station where about 1,000 illegal immigrants, primarily children, in squalid, cramped conditions, the Blaze reports.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat, said the immigrants are squeezed into the facility, and many have infectious diseases like tuberculosis, chickenpox and scabies.

“I’ve been saying, ‘Use the nonprofits, use the churches don’t just use the taxpayers’ dollars to take care of these young kids,’” Cuellar said. “[President Barack Obama] still has a long way to go to improve this. Don’t just listen to the words of the bureaucrats up there in Washington, listen to the men and women that work here. The men and women of the Border Patrol know what’s going on here.”

Cuellar said he talked to some of the children in the holding area and blamed failed immigration laws on the problem.

Frustrated with the pace of the investigation into the missing Malaysian airliner, a New York Congressman insisted Sunday that the FBI and NTSB should get more involved, Fox News reports.

New York Rep. Peter King, a Republican, said the the Malaysia government is not cooperating.

“This has been frustrating for the FBI,” said King, chairman of the House Sub-Committee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence and a former chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security. “My understanding is the Malaysian government is not cooperating.”

Among the 239 missing passengers are three Americans.

Much of the frustration stems from the slow Malaysian response.

In a ruling that comes as little surprise, a federal judge on Wednesday in Arizona ruled that Jared L. Loughner, who killed 6 and wounded 13 others including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is not mentally competent to stand trial, the New York Times reported.

U.S. District Judge  Larry A. Burns of  Tucson ruled that Loughner will be sent to a psychiatric facility until Sept. 21. At that point,  a hearing will be held to revisit his competency,   the New York Times reported.

If his status remains the same, he’ll be periodically re-evaluated.

“At the present time, Mr. Loughner does not have a rational understanding of these proceedings,” Judge Burns said, according to the Times.

The Times reported that the judge issued the ruling minutes after Loughner, 22, was dragged out of the courtroom. At one point he shouted, according to the Times:

“Thank you for the freak show. She died right in front of me. You’re treasonous.”
