A yearlong investigation into the Secret Service has found an agency “in crisis,” beset by low morale, scandals and the failure to provide adequate protection, the Associated Press reports.

The report by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee found that facilities that are secured by the agency were breached or had attempted breaches 143 times.

The report faults poor leadership and congressional budget cuts that have left the agency with a “staffing crisis.”

Following the report’s release, President Obama expressed “absolute” confidence in Joe Clancy, who is the agency’s director.

“This report reveals that the Secret Service is in crisis,” said the committee chairman, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

“Morale is down, attrition is up, misconduct continues and security breaches persist. Strong leadership from the top is required to fix the systemic mismanagement within the agency and to restore it to its former prestige.”

Secret Service Director Disputes News Accounts of White House Crash

Secret Service Director Joe Clancy disputed news reports that two high-ranking agents drunkenly crashed into a gate at the White House.

“Previous reports of a crash are inaccurate — there was no crash,” Clancy said at a Senate Appropriations Homeland Security subcommittee hearing, CNN reports.

“The video shows the vehicle entering the White House complex at a speed of approximately one to two miles per hour, and pushing aside a plastic barrel. There was no damage to the vehicle,” he said.

Still, Clancy said it was “unacceptable” that it took five days for him to be notified of the incident.

“If it is determined that any one of our employees concealed information about this alleged incident, they will be held accountable,” he told the panel. “Our mission is too important for this to happen. It undermines my leadership and I won’t stand for it.”

Not many people want to be in Joe Clancy’s shoes.

The longtime agent that President Obama recently appointed to lead the beleaguered Secret Service will face tough questions from lawmakers today over the latest embarrassment to hit the agency.

Clancy is scheduled to appear before the House Appropriations Committee for a hearing on the budget, but he’s likely to be grilled over the agency’s failure to stop avoidable security lapses and alcohol consumption among agents, CNN reports.

The former director, Julia Pierson, lost her job allowing a fence-jumping at the White House.

Recently, two top-ranking Secret Service officials are accused of being drunk and causing a disruption at a White House command post and an investigation of a potential explosive device.
