The Ohio State University student who attacked people with his car and a knife Monday may have been inspired by ISIS, the FBI said Wednesday.

The attack injured 11 people before a university police officer shot and killed Abdul Razak Ali Artan.

Law enforcement officials believe Artan was radicalized online by radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, the Washington Post reports.

“It certainly appears that he was radicalized online,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who was briefed by law enforcement officials Wednesday. Shortly before the attack, Artan referred to Awlaki as “our hero” in a post on Facebook, U.S. officials said. Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011. He also expressed disdain for more moderate Islamic clerics, urging people to ignore “celebrity scholars who have sold their deen (religion).”

The FBI interviewed dozens of Artan’s family members, neighbors and co-workers and analyzed electronic devices and social media accounts used by the college junior.

Special Agent in Charge Angela Byers said investigators were “not aware of anyone else being involved in the planning of this attack,” but they were still patching together a timeline of the attack.

On the morning of the attack, Artan purchased a knife, Columbus police said.

Professor Rongxing Li gained international attention for his role in helping NASA explore Mars.

But after a decade of help at Ohio State University, Li quit and disappeared. The university made no mention of his departure and removed information about him from the website.

Now, the Columbus Dispatch reports, the FBI is investigating whether Li shared defense secrets with China.

Li, who was the director of the mapping and geographic information system laboratory, “had access to Department of Defense technical information that was prohibited from sharing with the Chinese,” the Dispatch wrote, citing search warrants filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus.

The FBI, OSU and NASA declined to comment.

Ohio State Student Pleads Guilty to Sending Fake Bomb Threat to FBI

Note to Ohio State University student Jonathan Birkmeyer: Try just not showing up for the test next time. Or make up some crazy excuse. But don’t send the FBI a fake bomb threat.

Birkmeyer pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to sending a fake bomb threat to FBI headquarters that resulted in the evacuation of four Ohio State University building being evacuated in November, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

The paper reported that he apparently sent the bogus message to get out of taking a test.

On Nov. 16, the former Marine emailed the FBI, saying: “I have a paper that I found that has a detailed map of nine bombs placed in four different buildings on the Ohio State University campus.”

The paper reported that FBI traced the threat by tracking down the IP address to a stolen iPod touch in Birkmeyer’s possession.
