A CBP officer who used excessive force on a woman who applied for admission into the U.S. from Mexico pleaded guilty in federal court and agreed to resign.

Andre Maurice Chevalier admitted that he pulled the woman from her vehicle and slung her into the inspection booth at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in April 2022, causing her injuries to her face. After she fell to the ground, Chevalier picked her up, shoved her against her vehicle and handcuffed her.

As part of a plea agreement, Chevalier said he would not seek future employment with a federal law enforcement agency.

“Federal law enforcement officers are expected to treat the public with courtesy and respect,” Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari said in a statement. “Those who fail to adhere to this standard will be held accountable.”

Chevalier is set to be sentenced on March 8. He faces up to one year in prison.
