A Chicago man who shot two ATF agents and a Chicago police officer in July 2021 was sentenced to 27 years in prison, the Justice Department announced Wednesday

Eugene McLaurin said he opened fire because he thought the agents and officer, who were in an unmarked car, were members of a rival gang.

McLaurin followed the car and eventually pulled up alongside it, firing several shots from a Glock 9mm.

One of the agents was shot in the side, and the other was shot in the hand. A bullet grazed the side of the Chicago police officer’s head.

McLaurin pleaded guilty last year to three counts of assaulting a federal officer and two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence.

McLaurin has a criminal record. In 2013, he was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal gun possession. In 2015, he was sentenced to five years in prison for illegal gun possession and delivery of methamphetamine.
