The CIA claims it has “accidentally” deleted its only copy of the Senate’s lengthy torture report.
The CIA blamed the mistake on the inspector general’s office, which was using the report to review agency conduct, Salon reports.
The agency’s acting inspector general, Christopher Sharpley, claimed his office destroyed its copy of the report by uploading the Senate-provided disk, which was destroyed upon upload as part of normal procedure.
“It’s an embarrassing explanation that gives the appearance of extreme incompetence in the inspector general’s office, which is tasked with preventing abuse and fraud in an organization that stands accused of committing both in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks,” Salon wrote.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., sent a letter to the CIA, requesting that the agency immediately supply the inspector general with a new copy. “Your prompt response will allay my concern that this was more than an ‘accident,’” Feinstein wrote to Brennan.
