FBI agents executing a search warrant at former national security adviser John Bolton’s Washington office last month discovered documents marked classified, according to a court filing released Tuesday, Politico reports.

The Aug. 22 search turned up records referencing weapons of mass destruction, the U.S. mission to the United Nations and the government’s strategic communications. Some folders were labeled “confidential,” and at least one set of documents was marked “secret,” filings show.

Agents also searched Bolton’s Maryland home the same day but did not list any suspected classified documents there. In both searches, they seized computers and electronic devices.

Court records say investigators are pursuing potential violations of the Espionage Act, including unauthorized retention of classified information. A previous Justice Department probe into whether Bolton disclosed classified material in a memoir was dropped in 2021. It’s unclear when the current investigation began.

Justice Department lawyers released redacted versions of the inventories after media organizations sought disclosure. An attorney for Bolton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
