On the day a jury found two former Fullerton Police Department officers not guilty of beating a homeless man to death, the FBI said it would determine whether “further investigation is warranted” to bring new charges, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The officers are accused of beating to death Kelly Thomas, a 37-year-old schizophrenic man who was well-known in Fullerton, Calif.
“With the conclusion of the state court trial, investigators will examine the evidence and testimony to determine whether further investigation is warranted at the federal level,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller in Los Angeles said in a statement.
The trial lasted three weeks.
