Five years after the Hunter Biden probe began, Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday granted Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss special counsel status.
Garland said in a public statement that Weiss told him “his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel,” CNN reports. Garland said he reviewed Weiss’ request, “as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter” and “concluded it is in the public interest” to make him a special counsel.
Former FBI and DEA official Chuck Rosenberg appeared Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press” and described the move as “cosmetic.” He said not much will change.
Republicans have accused Weiss of signing off on a sweetheart deal that would have allowed Hunter Biden to plead to misdemeanor charges. The federal judge rejected that, and now it appears the case may go to trial.
IRS whistleblowers have accused the Justice Department of slow-walking the case in favor of Hunter Biden. Weiss, a Trump appointee who was kept on to investigate Hunter Biden, has insisted he’s been able to operate freely without interference.
