A judge on Monday finally threatened to jail Donald Trump if he continues to violate a gag order in his New York hush money trial.
Judge Juan Merchan fined the former president for the 10th time for breaking the order, which bars him from criticizing jurors, court officials and members of the judge’s family, the Associated Press reports.
Merchan said Trump’s remarks “threaten to interfere with the fair administration of justice and constitute a direct attack on the rule of law. I cannot allow that to continue.”
“As much as I don’t want to impose a jail sanction,” the judge added, “I want you to understand that I will have to if necessary and appropriate.”
Trump was previously fined $9,000 for nine other gag order violations for posts on Truth Social and his website.
After his day in court ended, Trump suggested he’s willing to be jailed to keep berating the case.
“Our Constitution is much more important than jail,” Trump said. “It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day.”
