About a decade before Omar Mateen opened fire on an Orlando nightclub, killing more than 50 people, he worked for a global security firm that was one of the biggest contractors for the federal government after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mateen began working as a security officer for G4S Secure Solutions in 2007, The Week reports.

The job required Mateen to carry a weapon and obtain a license as a security guard.

“Mateen underwent company screening and background checks when he was recruited in 2007 and the check revealed nothing of concern,” G4S North America CEO John Kenning said in a statement. “His screening was repeated in 2013 with no findings. We were not made aware of any alleged connections between Mateen and terrorist activities.”

Although Mateen cleared company screenings, G4S reportedly was aware of an FBI investigation targeting Mateen. But the company said it was unaware of “alleged connections between Mateen and terrorist activities.”

Mateen recently worked as a security guard at a gated community.
