Smoking Marijuana a Year Ago Won’t Automatically Disqualify Job Applicants for Secret Service

Steve Neavling

The Secret Service is the latest federal law enforcement agency to relax its employment policy on marijuana.

Applicants who have used cannabis within a year of applying are now eligible for a job, Green State reports

The previous policy required Secret Service applicants to wait one to five years after consuming regulated marijuana before landing a job. Applicants who were 28 years or older were required to abstain from legally purchased marijuana for five or more years.

Now applicants must wait one year.

Last week, we reported that the ATF also changed its employment policy to allow applicants to work for the bureau if they’ve grown, manufactured or sold marijuana in compliance with state laws.

In 2021, the FBI relaxed its employment policies to no longer disqualify prospective agents for having consumed cannabis no more than 24 times as an adult.

The changes in employment policies come amid a wave of states legalizing recreational and medical marijuana.
