James E. Feehery Jr., a retired FBI agent who tracked down fugitives and investigated organized crime, insurance fraud, and bank robberies, has died.

He was 78.

Feehery lived in West Chester, Pa., at the time of his death, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports

At one point, Feehery was the FBI’s first special agent to assist in the United Kingdom’s Serious Fraud Office in London. He also investigated hundreds of complex cases across the U.S. and in England, Scotland, Spain and the Bahamas.

Feehery retired from the bureau in 1997. After his retirement, he worked for two years with the National Fraud Center and co-founded the investigation firm Cloud, Feehery, and Richter in Pennsylvania.

After college, Feehery served in the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant in Vietnam after his brother was killed there in 1967.

“He was known for his fierce devotion to family, deep love of country, strong faith, work ethic, and loyalty to many relatives and friends,” his family said in an online tribute.
