In a vote that’s embarrassing to the GOP House leadership, the House Tuesday failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, CNN reports. The vote was 214 for impeachment and 216 against.

Homeland Security Director Alejandro Mayorkas.

Four Republicans voted with Democrats against the effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — Reps. Blake D. Moore (Utah), Mike Gallagher (Wis.), Tom McClintock (Calif.) and Ken Buck (Colo.).

Success of impeachment was always considered iffy. Many argued that the issue was over policy and there was no impeachable issue involved.

Mayorkas had been working with the Senate to put forth a bipartisan comprehensive bill to address the border crisis.

Republicans in the House say they won’t pass the bill, saying it’s inadequate.

Democrats have accused the Republicans of listening to Donald Trump, who they say wants the bill rejected to make President Biden look bad during the final stretch of the presidential campaign.
